Raynaud's Phenomenon
Raynaud’s phenomenon is a condition that results in bluish white discoloration of the fingers and toes due to exposure to cold. This is a result of spasms in the small blood vessels. Initially the fingers or toes will turn white, then blue. Once the fingers and toes warm up, the skin at the site will turn red. Oftentimes, the condition is accompanied by pain or numbness at the fingers and toes as well. Stress and smoking can worsen the symptoms.
This condition affects women more than men. The primary treatment is to avoid the cold. Smoke secession for smokers is also important. Medications such as calcium channel blockers can be taken orally for treatment.
