Yellow Toenail
The appearance of yellow toenails can be attributed to several causes. The most common cause is a fungal infection. Fungus is present in our environment. With trauma to the nails, fungus can enter and develop underneath the nails causing infection of the nail beds. This in turn causes the nails to become thick, raised and yellow in color. Treatment of fungal nails can be of topical medication, oral medication, or nail avulsion (nail removal).
Other causes of yellow toenails include diabetes mellitus, and lymphedema (chronic leg swelling). The usage of nail polish can cause yellow staining of the nails as well. Once the offending factor for the yellow nails is eliminated, it takes several months for the new nails to grow out.
